Active Faith

November 11, 2017 Scout Food Drive

On November 11, 2017 the Scouts collected over 5,000 pounds of non-perishable food items from South Lyon community members. With the extra food Active Faith will be able to feed approximately 120 families. Thank you to the Scouts for their hard work and for the communities donations. Additional donations can be made at local grocery stores.

Active Faith Community Services 30th Anniversary Celebration

Active Faith celebrated their 30th anniversary on October 21st with and open house for residents and community members.  Michigan Senator Mike Kowell was in attendance to deliver a Special Tribute recognizing Active Faith's individual success and its positive influence in and around the South Lyon community.

Members of the SLU Lacrosse team really enjoyed serving the community through Active Faith and preparing for the 30 year celebration! Newly painted walls and a clean up of the distribution area were the projects for the day. Thank you for all of your hard work and helping Active Faith prepare for their BIG 30th anniversary event that was held on October 21st.

A great big THANK YOU to Jamie Gilbert for updating our landscaping here at Active Faith.

Vision Plus donated 255 pounds of food. They saw our post and bought several much needed items.

New Hope responded to our need by bringing in 140 pounds.

Golf Outing Fundraiser

The 2017 Golf Outing, held on Monday, July 17th at the Salem Hills Golf Course, was a great success. Thank you to Costco for their donation of trail mix for our golfers.

With the 20th Annual Tee Off Golf Outing behind us, it is important to remember our goal to the community. In the 30 years that Active Faith has been serving the area, we continued to provide long term and temporary assistance to those who have fallen on difficult times in hopes of returning them to the independent pursuit of their life's goals.

Thank you to Nick who had his friends bring food, socks, and underwear for his 8th birthday instead of gifts for himself. Thanks for thinking about the kids in South Lyon that don't have a lot.

Thank you to our sweet volunteer angel who revived our planter boxes with Pam Tekieli Hewison.

CookStars: Nutrition Ambassador Training Program

Food Gatherers is please to partner with Active Faith Community Services in the pilot program of CookStars: Nutrition Ambassador Training Program. Two Active Faith volunteers, Emily Cartmill and Tiffany Curry, were trained to deliver key nutrition messaging through food tasting and cooking demonstrations to families during our food distribution.

Food distribution is held the second and fourth Monday each month at Active Faith. Come and enjoy a sample of the nutritious food being demonstrated.

Postal Food Drive

The annual Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger®Food Drive, on May 13 was a great success! Community members placed non perishable food items at their mailbox for pick up by local postal carriers. This event is designed to help replenish local food pantries in the communities they serve.

Throughout the community mail carriers picked up food and delivered it to Active Faith. We would like to thank the community for their donations and the local carriers who picked up and delivered over six tons of food to Active Faith that day.

In 2017, during the postal drive, Active Faith received a total of 14,193.3 pounds of donated food. After removing the out dated products, Active Faith was able to add 12,924.3 pounds of food to their pantry shelves.

Youth and Young Adult Program

On Monday, April 24, Oakland County Michigan Works came to the Active Faith Distribution Day. They shared information on how Michigan Works can help families develop occupational, work readiness, and basic life skills that contribute to good work habits, and to stress both education and job experience as prerequisites to a successful future.

Michigan Works! is a well-established employment and career management resource that has been in business for over thirty years. Their staff are degreed career management specialists and possess certifications in Career Development and/or Business Solutions.

Strike Out Hunger

The March 26th Strike Out Hunger fundraiser was a GREAT success.  A whopping $7,963.24 was raised during this event. Thank you to all the family members and their friends that registered and participated in this year’s Strike-Out-Hunger event at the Pinz Bowling center in South Lyon, Michigan. All proceeds from this event went to support Active Faith, our local community food pantry. The cost per lane was $100 (up to 5 people) and included a large pizza, soft drink, bowling shoes, and as many games as you and your teammates could play between the hours of 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. A prize was given for the “best dressed team”.

A 50/50 drawing and a silent auction with several beautiful gift baskets were donated by many generous business owners and individuals from South Lyon and the surrounding community.

If you missed the event this year, make sure you sign up for Strike Out Hunger in 2018!

She hopes to have made a difference in someone’s life by her choice to share her birthday with others.

Katie Bracco, of South Lyon, knows generosity and decided to give part of her birthday gifts to Active Faith clients.

Boy Scout troops all gathered for the Annual Scout Food Drive in November that fills our shelves for the holidays. They load, carry and sort nearly 5000 pounds of food collected from South Lyon area residents. Great work everyone!

I'm very grateful for your organization; I've recently fallen on hard times and a friend told me about your assistance as a local resource. I'm feeling more confident and like myself now that I have food in the house and those food insecurities are not taking over my thoughts. I am so very very grateful. I enjoy taking pictures of food and after washing up some of the amazing produce I was able to get from your organization today I took the photo that I have attached.

Feel free to use it in anyway you like. I am so grateful to have this assistance I can't thank you all enough. - Active Faith Client

“I want to thank Active Faith from the bottom of my heart for helping my brother and his family. They needed to move from their home quickly and could not take anything with them, a situation out of their control. Active Faith stepped in and made sure they had what they needed. My brother was on kidney dialysis, 3 times a week making him unable to work. Because he moved into a new place and now has some furniture and other things they needed, he is now able to be put on the transplant list. Active Faith, you are truly a blessing.”  - a client’s sister

Our sister in Faith, Clarice (Babe) French was called home on December 27, 2016. Babe volunteered at Active Faith for many years in clothing. We will miss her.
